In Reply to: Vera Neuman Weiss/Birth record in Fejer County by Joe Tinkelman of 17159

Dear Joe,

We've been on a wild goose chase with Pusztavam--it's all wrong. Now I have good news and bad news.

I took a look at the 1920 and 1930 census records, and it is clear that both Frank and Vera immigrated in 1903. The 1910 immigration record for Vera also indicates that she was in the U.S. previously 1903-1910, so this was coming back from a trip home to Hungary.

If you look closely at the 1920 census, it actually gives a place in Hungary where they were from. It looks like Nagyrad. This could be a variety of places with similar names, but nothing jumps out as a strong possibility.

I then searched more diligently for their original immigration record, and I found it. Veronika (age 19) and Ferencz (age 25, tailor) Weiss immigrated on September 2, 1903, through the port of Philadelphia. They were from NAGYVARÁD! Their destination was Ferencz's brother-in-law, Josef Haber, at 207 E. 107th St., New York. Traveling with them was Josef's wife, Ida, and her two children. They are listed as being from Grosswardein, which is another name for Nagyvarád.

Nagyvarád is now Oradea in Romania. Unfortunately, that means that the Jewish records (nor any others) from that period will NOT be available on microfilm. It would probably be possible to find them if you were to travel to Oradea personally, or hire a researcher in Romania.

Additional information which should be helpful in tracing the family include Frank's date of birth (March 4, 1878, from his World War I registration) and that Vera's father's name was Hermann Neumann (from her 1910 immigration record).

At the very least it will save you a useless trip to Fejér county.

Prior to our first trip to Hungary, someone gave me excellent advice. He said not to expect to learn anything about the family during the trip but to enjoy the great pleasures of the country. He was right on. Hungary is a joyful country to visit, and if you are able to visit Romania as well, it will be doubly pleasurable.

I will let you know if I uncover anything more that may be useful.

Janet
