Dear Julian,

In my opinion, Kartgas is a misreading of Janos Kartyas's immigration record, and of course Lapron on the immigration record is Sopron.

The one piece of information on that record that may be of use to you is his place of birth, which looks like Emhathell. While there is no place with that spelling, a little imagination may give a clue as to where this is.

This area was mixed German (Austrian) and Hungarian. The word for "German" in German is Deutsch; in Hungarian it is Nemet. A village just to the south of Sopron was variously named Nemet-Keresztur, Sopronkeresztur, and Deutsch Heiligen Kreuz. If one puts the Nemet together with the Heiligen, you get something similar to Emhathell. This village is now Deutschkreutz and is located in Burgenland, Austria, just over the Hungarian border. Roman Catholic church records are available on LDS film 1827-1895.

Of course the Sopron records are also available, but being a large town, you will have many films to go through.

If you do not know how to access these films, I would be happy to give you some guidance.

Janet
