Julian: Wife Pauline, 32, and children Johan, 5, Samuel, 3, and Heinrich, 6 months old, joined father János Katyas in the USA in May 1909. You likely have seen their arrival record in Ellis Island. All their birthplaces are listed as Sopron.

I looked at the spelling of the birthplace of János sen. in his December 1907 arrival record. As Janet suggested, it looks like Emhathell, or perhaps Embathell. Could this be a misspelling of Szombathely?

You have a very promising avenue for your search as, with some effort, you may be able to locate the civil birth records for young Johan (János) and Samuel, perhaps even Heinrich, on LDS microfilm of the civil records of Sopron. If you find the birth entry of even just one of these children, it will indicate the birthplace of the father, besides containing other useful information.

Regards, Fritz
