KOWALSKI is Polish; KOVALSKY is Slovak spelling and KOWALSKY must be an Americanized version of (my guess) the Slovak KOVALSKY.
Without a precise name of a village it is hard to direct your research. Is it in Poland or is it in Slovak Republic? If we knew the village than you could proceed with the research in the church records.
Any naturalization petition, SS-5Form, draft registration form, state marriage application?
