Harlin K. Hutsell, 74, Springfield, Mo., departed March 4, 2001. Harlin was born near Mountain Grove, Mo., June 17, 1926, to Everett and Audrey Young Hutsell. Harlin graduated from Mountain Grove High School in 1944. He was very active in Future Farmers of America, as well as in sports. He received honors for his work in FFA and in both track and football. One of Harlin's sports highlights was playing for three consecutive years in the Ozark Bowl, which at the time was considered to be a great honor. One of his favorite stories was the Panthers' holding conference rivals scoreless for an entire season. After graduation, Harlin enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He received his training at Great Lakes, Ill. and Williamsburg, Va. He was then ordered to San Pedro, Calif., and assigned to the U.S.S. Carteret, APO 70. He spent the next two years on active duty, seeing action in Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After discharge from the Navy, he enrolled in Southwest Missouri State College. Harlin played four years for the Bears and was voted Most Outstanding Back his senior year. During this time he met Jeanette Wade, and they were married in 1948. Harlin graduated in 1950, and taught high school and coached prep football in Houston, Mo. During this tenure, Harlin and his wife were blessed with two children, Kyle and Rhonda. Harlin and his family moved to Springfield in 1954, where the Springfield School System asked Harlin to assist in the development of the curriculum for the driver's education program that was being established. He accepted the challenge and was assigned to Central High School where he taught driver's education and was an assistant football coach. Two years later, in 1956, Harlin was transferred to Parkview High School. He again taught driver's education and continued pursuing his enjoyment of sports by being assistant football coach. Later, he assumed the position of head coach and was the Viking's skipper for 12 seasons. During this busy time in his life, Harlin was nevertheless able to earn his master's degree in education from Drury College. In 1986, after 30 years with Parkview, Harlin retired from teaching and coaching. Having already purchased a farm near Mountain Grove, Harlin enjoyed his retirement by gardening and raising Limousin beef cattle. One thing for sure, no one could take the country out of this Wright County man. Harlin was active in First Baptist Church where he served as deacon for many years. Another one of his enjoyments was working with the youth of the church. His family and many friends will miss his sense of humor, smile and friendship. Harlin is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jeanette; his daughter, Rhonda and her husband, Larry Gibson; his daughter-in-law, Nancy Hutsell; four grandchildren, D'Anna, Kyle, Kent and Kristin, and Gregory Hutsell; two brothers, Hulen and J.D. Hutsell; three sisters, Virlee Cardin, Vera Austin and Valera Blackwell; and several nieces and nephews. Harlin was preceded in death by his son, Kyle Ray Hutsell; and his parents, Everett and Audrey Hutsell. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2001, in First Baptist Church with the Dr. Ron Milne and Rev. Guy Lawyer officiating. Burial will be in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Greenlawn Funeral Home South. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church.
