No, I did not look for or locate an actual birth record for Laura. Birth records were not mandatory during this time period, but I do hope you are able to find one. The earliest record I noticed on a quick search was in the 1900 census when she was listed as Laura Porter and was living with Jennie Ritter's parents in Noble Co IN. Her birthdate varies, but her obit shows that she "was born to Frank and Jeanette (Ritter) Porter Nov. 9, 1889 near Kimmell." There are several other references that Laura was nee Porter, so you may have to determine which ones you believe to be more reliable. I also noticed in the rootsweb database of California Deaths that her son Weldon's death record gives his mother's maiden name as Porter (Weldon Hugh Halterman b 23 Nov 1909 Indiana, died 24 May 1985 Alameda Co CA, age 75; mother nee Porter).
