MCGUIRE -- Looking for a Disaster

I'm tracing Nathaniel McGuire, b 1797 in Kentucky, who appears in the 1830 census in Wabash Twp, Tippecanoe Co.,with 8 children and a wife. He is next seen marrying one Nancy Sanders in Delaware Co., 1831, and then in Grant Co. for the 1840 census (with only one child from the previous marriage, based on ages) and finally they settle in Miami Co., where he dies in 1873. According to the obituary, written in 1873, he "entered a tract of land" in Tippecanoe Co. in the 1820's and then started a business in Lafayette.

The question here is, what happened to the family of 1830? I haven't seen any online sources or references that would give information about either a plague or natural disaster, or even death records for the period. Losing seven children and a wife within a year seems extreme, even for the frontier.

Can anyone point me to sources where I might find this information?

Thanks for your help!

Joe Root
