Hi!
I am trying to locate information on a husband and wife -
Thomas Smith (born approx 1830) married Melvina Hart (born approx 1830) on August 11, 1857 in Decatur County. In 1860 Thomas and Melvina were living in Putnam County with their three children: Ellen, John, and Susan. Thomas enlisted in Company D, 50th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry on Sept. 12, 1861. After the war, the family moved around alot - I find them in Clay County in 1870 and in Hamilton County in 1880. Melvina turns up living with relatives in Hancock County in 1900. I thought I found her at the Soldiers Home as an inmate in 1910, but upon a casual inquiry at state archives - they seem to think that this isn't the same person (although name, age, and place of birth are the same). To add fuel to this fire - I find Thomas Smith, Company D, 50th Regiment buried at the Soldiers Home Cemetery (Row 12 West Central Section).
My Questions: Can anyone tell me if there would be a way to locate the death date of Thomas (is it on his stone), or do I have to ask about a death certificate? And, can anyone find Melvina buried at the Soldiers Home? Are there any other records that may shed light on death dates for these two individuals - or could give me any info on descendants? I believe that Thomas Smith is also the father of Mary Alice Smith Gray - - who became James Whitcomb Riley's "Little Orphan Annie." I believe that Thomas was married to Ellen Reddenhouse prior to his marriage to Melivina, and Ellen and Thomas are Mary Alice's parents.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
