Hello
I have been researching my family's history in India but could go back no further than 1825, when my great (x4) grandmother Mary van Diemen married a military drummer, Francis Herbert, in Bombay. Mary's father was said to have been a Dutch contractor, yet I could find no trace of van Diemens arriving or being given permission to reside in India before or during this period. Then other India List members told me that I should look in Indonesia, as there were definitely van Diemens there. I think there is a high probability that I have Indonesian ancestors, judging by family photographs.
Can anyone tell me how I can investigate this further?
Also, does anyone know how likely it is that the van Diemens would have travelled from the Dutch East Indies to Bombay at this date?
I should be very grateful for any help.
