Dear Katherine, "Your" Harvey Thomson was my great-great-great-grandfather. He sailed to the Dutch East Indies in 1811, possibly with the same group as Raffles, but of that I'm not sure. He started an indigo-plantation near Yogjakarta but wasn't really successfull. He made his will in 1837 en died shortly after (suicide?) at the age of only 47 ant totally bankrupt. He married in 1822 the adopted daughter of Antoine Bonnard, Antoinette. She probably was an indo-european and no princess (sorry). She died after giving birth to her son William in 1827 in Aberdeen; the son died a few days later. As children of Harvey I have: 1. James THOMSON (Djokjakarta 9.2.1822 – Magelang 18.4.1877) 2. William THOMSON (Abderdeen 3.1.1827 – Aberdeen 12.1.1827) 3. William THOMSON (adopted)(Pekalongan 28.4.1830 – Pekalongan 31.3.1860) 4. George THOMSON (adopted)(Pekalongan 12.8.1832 – Pekalongan 4.11.1898) If you want to know more about the Thomson family in Indonesia, you can contact me at: cindy.rodermond@wanadoo.nl I certainly would like to know more about the Thomsons in Scotland. So plaese let me know if you have any info or maybe photographs. I also have a copy of the book by E.M.C. van Enk (in dutch) and photographs of the Thomsonfamily from the beginning of 1900.
