Hello Christopher - that was indeed my first post on the RIC. Here's the deal... I don't know whether you are posting from Ireland, the US, or other.. But it seems that many families claim that their ancestor came here because they were deserting from the RIC or other conscripted service.
Somewhere I have a picture of my gr. grandfather, George Patrick Flanagan, in a uniform that 'could be' an RIC uniform. I can't find the picture because we moved and so many things are still in storage.
I have searched everywhere on many different passenger lists and Ellis Island and Ancestry.com and nowhere can I find his name. On the 1920 census, he confirms what my grandparents told me... that he came here in 1898 with his wife Kathleen. I've looked up all variants of George and Patrick as well as Flanagan with no success. To further the 'mystery' my grandmother was born in 1898 and was never able to 'find' her birth certificate although she swore she was born in the US.
So, that's basically what my posting here was about... how to find more info on deserters and people who came to the US under an assumed name perhaps and then re-took their real name. I know that he was from Ennistymon, and have the letter that his brother wrote to my grandmother when gr. grandfather died there on a visit in 1922. The brother's last name was Flanagan and so the name he used in the US was correct.
That's the gist of my post and trying to search using other avenues of discovery.
