The first Clare POWELL to migrate to Victoria, Australia, was Thomas POWELL.
Thomas and his wife, Susanna POWELL (nee McNAMARA), emigrated to Victoria from County Clare, Ireland, on the 'William Metcalfe' on 15 Nov 1839. The baby son of Thomas and Susannah POWELL, Patrick, died aged (1&1/2 years) on the voyage. According to the shipping records, Thomas and Susanna POWELL were immigrants, British subjects, who had been introduced into the colony of New South Wales on Government bounty by Mr John MARSHALL of London.
The parents of Thomas POWELL were Cornelius POWELL and Mary POWELL (nee MARO(O)NEY).
It appears that Cornelius and Mary POWELL and their children resided in the townland of Affick (then also known as 'Affog'/'Affugg'/'Affogh'/'Affagh') in the parish of Tulla, Co Clare, Ireland. The entries of Cornelius POWEL, Daniel POWEL and James POWEL, their sons, in the baptismal register for the parish of Tulla indicate that it was this townland where they lived as at 7 Feb 1821, 25 Apr 1826 and 22 Nov 1828 respectively.
'Affog' is listed in Pender's 1659 Census of Ireland. The 1659 Census of Ireland lists the townland as 'Affugg'. The spelling 'Affog/Affugg'/etc appears to have changed to 'Affick' in more recent times.
According to 'The History and Topography of the County of Clare' by James FROST, Part II History of Thomond, Book of Forfeitures and Distributions: Notes, Barony of Tulla Upper: Part E: Tulla Parish:
The proprietor of the townland off Affick in 1641 was Oliver DELAHOYDE when it was disposed of to Edmond MAGRATH, Phillip BIGOE, John Oge MOORE and Colonel Garrett MOORE.
The proprietor of Tyredagh in 1641 was also Oliver DELAHOYD who disposes of it to Edmond MAGRATH.
'In 1659, the undernamed townlands in Tulla parish, were occupied, as tenants by the following persons:- Affick, Thomas Hewitt, and Teige MacNamara, gents.; ... Tyredagh, David Sutton; ....
In 1664, the following townlands in Tulla parish were occupied by the undernamed tenants:- ... ; Affock, Charles Carty; ...'.
Occupiers of land in the parish of Tulla on 11 Feb 1827 (in Clare Library's County of Clare Tithe Applotment Books project) includes Connor POWELL in the townland of Affogh. Connor POWELL is listed 3 times indicating that he may have occupied 3 parcels of land in that townland (including Knock James). Other POWELLs listed at the time in Affogh were Thomas POWELL, John POWELL, Patrick POWELL and Patrick POWELL Jnr. There were 2 POWELLs then in the townland of Tyredagh in the parish of Tulla, namely, James POWELL and Peter POWELL (Derrriree/Derryniree & Leitera).
The Registry of Freeholders in County Clare in 1841 on the Clare Library website includes Patrick POWELL, farmer, at the address of Affog(h), property at Affog(h) in the Barony of Tulla, Sessions at Tulla, Sessions Date was 12 Oct 1841 and it was reported in the Clare Journal of 1841 on 27 Sep 1841.
Martin POWELL was listed at Affick in the Tulla parish in the Griffith's Valuation 1855 in the 'P' surnames list. Patrick POWELL and Peter POWELL were included in that list at Tyredagh Upper.
There were no POWELLs listed for the townland of Tulla in the 1901 Census of Clare in the District Electoral Division of Tulla (DED No: 154/22).
However, it was Connor POWELL - not Cornelius POWELL - who emigrated to Australia from Tulla, County Clare, with his then spouse, Ellen POWELL (nee CAHIR) and 6 children (Michael (15 & 1/2), Patrick (13), Dennis (11), Martin (3), Maria (6) and Margaret (6 mths)). They left London for Melbourne on the 'Neptune' arriving on 29 Mar 1841. Connor and Ellen POWELL were accompanied by Ann POWELL (20, laundress), Cornelius POWELL (19 labourer) and John POWELL (18 labourer) on the 'Neptune'.
Some descendants have suggested that Connor POWELL may have first married Mary MORO(O)NEY and they may have had at least 5 children (Thomas, Michael, Ann, Cornelius and John) before Connor married his second wife, Ellen CAHIR. I strongly doubt the correctness of this. The parents of Thomas POWELL, according to his death certificate, were Cornelius POWELL and Mary POWELL (nee MORO(O)NEY).
The Connor POWELL family were bounty immigrants introduced into the 'Colony at Port Phillip on Government Bounty by Mr John MARSHALL of London'. Under the bounty scheme young single men and women, who were accompanying relatives, were eligible for bounty passages.
Connor POWELL listed his age on the passenger list as 38 years and his occupation as 'smith'. Connor may have put his age back to ensure that he would be eligible for a bounty passage because they were only available to men under 40 years.
Connor POWELL's death certificate from the Registry of BDM Victoria shows his age at the time of his death (6 Jan 1870) as 70 years. This would indicate that Connor was born in Ireland about 1800, and his age at the time of the arrival of the 'Neptune' (29 Mar 1841), about 41 years. Connor POWELL's death certificate records his parents' names as unknown.
To add to the uncertainty, the Irish name of 'Conor' - which has the alternative spelling of 'Connor' - is, in English, 'Cornelius': www.hylit.com/info/Names/IrishBOYSnames.html.
One possible explanation, which some descendants have advocated, is that Cornelius POWELL and Connor POWELL were one and the same person. I respectfully think this is incorrect for several reasons. First, the death certificate for Connor POWELL does not include Thomas, Michael, Ann, Cornelius and John among his children. Second, Connor POWELL (born c 1800) would have only been about 12 years old when Thomas POWELL was born (c 1813). So, it is not likely that Connor POWELL was the father of Thomas POWELL. [According to the passenger list for the 'William Metcalfe', which arrived on 15 Nov 1839, Thomas POWELL was 27 years old - which suggests that he was born in 1812 - and Susanna POWELL (nee McNAMARA) was 20 years old]. Third, Cornelius POWELL and Mary MORO(O)NEY had children in 1826 (Daniel) and 1828 (James) well after Connor POWELL married Ellen CAHIR. Connor POWELL and Ellen CAHIR had Michael Cahir POWELL about 1824 and Patrick about 1828. Fourth, the townland shown in the Tulla baptismal register 1819 to 1846 for the residence of Cornelius POWELL and Mary MORO(O)NEY is Affog but the townland shown for the residence of Connor POWELL and Ellen CAHIR is Tyredagh. Finally, the death certificates of Thomas, Michael, Cornelius and John POWELL - many years after their emigration - all record their father as Cornelius POWELL - not Connor POWELL! A clear distinction seems to have been drawn between the two POWELLs.
Other possibilities are that Connor POWELL was either a brother of Cornelius POWELL who never left Ireland or Connor POWELL was a brother of Thomas, Michael, Ann, Cornelius and John POWELL (which I think more likely). Some of the children of Cornelius POWELL (Ann, Cornelius and John) may have simply accompanied their brother (or their uncle) - Connor POWELL - and his family on the 'Neptune'. Connor POWELL's likely birth date (c 1800) arguably sits more comfortably - though not irrefutably - with his being a brother of Thomas, Michael, Ann, Cornelius and John POWELL because their birth dates range from c 1813 to c 1823. The oddity about this view, if it is correct, is that the parents Cornelius POWELL and Mary POWELL (nee MORO(O)NEY) would have had 2 sons with interchangeable names, Connor and Cornelius.
The baptism records in the Tulla parish for Margaret POWEL, daughter of Connor POWELL and Ellen POWELL (nee CAHIR), in 1840 give her sponsors as Tom POWEL and Margaret CAHIR - surely relatives, maybe brother and sister, of Connor and Ellen respectively.
It appears that Connor POWELL and Ellen POWELL (nee CAHIR) and their children resided in the townland of Tyredagh in the parish of Tulla, Co Clare, Ireland. The entries of Martin POWEL and Margaret POWEL, their children, in the baptismal register for the parish of Tulla indicate that it was this townland where they lived as at 17 Oct 1837 and 28 June 1840 respectively.

Connor POWELL is listed 3 times indicating that he may have occupied 3 parcels of land in that townland (including Knock James). Other POWELLs listed at the time in Affogh were Thomas POWELL, John POWELL, Patrick POWELL and Patrick POWELL Jnr. There were 2 POWELLs then in the townland of Tyredagh in the parish of Tulla, namely, James POWELL and Peter POWELL (Derrriree/Derryniree & Leitera). There were no POWELLs listed for the townland of Tulla in the 1901 Census of Clare in the District Electoral Division of Tulla (DED No: 154/22).
Connor and Ellen POWELL and their children (Michael, Patrick, Dennis, Maria, Martin and Margaret), from Tulla, Co Clare Ireland, left London for Melbourne on the 'Neptune', arriving on 29 Mar 1841. They were bounty migrants, introduced into the Colony of Port Phillip by the agent John Marshall of London.
Does anyone have links with these POWELLs? Can anyone shed any light on their origins in Co Clare and their relationships at that time?
