I am researching this KELLY family for my spouse.
Thomas KELLY, son of Jeremiah and Sarah KELLY (mn unknown), was born c 1796 [source: death cert for Thomas' death on 29 Dec 1864 at Bungaree, Ballarat, says he was 68 yrs old in 'Clare, Ireland' and had been 11 years in Victoria when he died]. He therefore apparently emigrated to Victoria in 1853 and was 57 years old at the time. Shipping records have not been located for his migration to Victoria.
The headstone on the grave of Thomas KELLY at the Old Ballarat Cemetery [Cnr Thonen Drive and Clifton Drive, area E2, section 15, row 1, grave 1] states:

Thomas KELLY
Late of Ennis, Co Clare, Ireland
Died 29th December 1864
Aged 68 years
May his soul rest in peace Amen
Their son JEREMIAH
Died 8th April 1872 Aged 28 years

Also their son PATRICK
Died 27 March 1903 Aged 68 years
RIP
Margaret KELLY

The Registry of Freeholders in County Clare in 1841 on the Clare Library website includes 8 KELLYs, 4 of whom occupied property at Ennis reported in the Clare Journal of 1841 on 4 Oct 1841, namely:
(1) Darby KELLY farmer Tullaghaboy Kanturk (property at) Islands (barony) Ennis (Sessions)
(2) James KELLY farmer Tullaghaboy Kanturk (property at) Islands (barony) Ennis (Sessions)
(3) Peter KELLY farmer Tullaghaboy Kanturk (property at) Islands (barony) Ennis (Sessions)
(4) Pat KELLY farmer Kilmaley Kilmaley (property at) Islands (barony) Ennis (Sessions)
Note: The name 'Darby' is short for 'Diarmud' and both Darby and Jeremiah are cited as anglicised versions of 'Diarmud'.
The Clare Library website (www.clarelibrary.ie) has online the County Clare Tithe Applotment Books showing occupiers of land in the Parish of Dysert [TAB spelling: Dysart] on 8 April 1843. It includes land held by Michael, James, John, Joseph, Patt, Thady and Martin KELLY in various townlands (but not in Ballygriffy North) in Dysert. There is no Jeremiah KELLY listed at that time.
The Clare Library website also has online the Griffiths Valuation 1855 (surname list) of landholders. There are many KELLYs listed including several Jeremiah, Martin, John and Patrick KELLYs. As to Jeremiah KELLY, there are 4 of them listed at 4 different townlands in the Parish of Dysert in the Poor Law Union of Ennis, including one at Ballygriffy North.
While Thomas and Ellen KELLY may well have emigrated to Australia by 1855, it is possible that Thomas' father, Jeremiah KELLY, remained at Ennis.
The fact that there are 4 listings of Jeremiah KELLY in the Griffiths Valuation 1855 (surname list) does not necessarily mean that there were 4 different people - one Jeremiah KELLY may have held more than one parcel of land in the parish.
Also listed at the Clare Library website are the landowners in 1876 including Jeremiah KELLY at Ballygriffy, Ennis, County Clare (384 acres).
Church records as at 1900 for the 46 Clare parishes (and St Mary's Limerick City parish) included 1270 KELLY families.
In the 1901 Census of Clare, the only KELLY listed in the townland of Ballygriffy North in the District Electoral Division of Templemaley was a John KELLY, an unmarried domestic servant, aged 20: DED No 25/16. There were, however, KELLYs in other townlands in that DED and in the DED of Dysert.
So, I am guessing that our Jeremiah KELLY - and through him, Thomas KELLY - came from Dysert in Ennis, County Clare.
It would be great if we could confirm or categorically disprove this guesswork.
Thomas and Ellen KELLY and their living children (Patrick, Ellen, Daniel and Jeremiah) emigrated to Australia between 1846 and 1869, probably about 1853.
Can anyone please shed more light on these KELLYs from Ennis in Co Clare, especially the townland, etc that they came from? I am keen to establish connections with other KELLYs from Clare and other KELLYs who settled in Australia. I am also keen to know the circumstances in which our KELLYs migrated to Australia.
