O'Neil, Byrnes before the famine

I am trying to trace the Parish or Townland my ancestors lived in before they came over to America about 1853. I believe they took ship in the summer or fall of that year. Their names were William O'Neil and Mary Byrnes and when they landed Mary was expecting her first child. He was born in early January 1854 in Canada, shortly after arrival. In a few years they crossed the border into Vermont and settled near Burlington.

My grandmother told me that their daughter Maggie said her parents came from "County Dare" but as that could not be so we have tried to puzzle out what she meant. Kildare? Derry? Or, could it be Clare? All of those places had populations of persons named both O'Neil and Byrnes.

Is anyone familiar with families with these names who lived in Clare before 1850 or before the famine? Would appreciate any clues---names of towns in the Griffiths Valuation where these names appear, for example---that you could help with.
Thank you.
