Note: this post is part of a reply to a query on the McQuoid surname forum but I hope someone here may be able to help with the brickwall as well. Hello Philip: I see you have stumbled upon my brickwall. I have been searching for additional info re: Sarah Jane McQuoid (Keenan) b. 1809;IRL for many years to no avail. I do know that she and husband, Felix Keenan;b. 1814;IRL had a son, John baptized in Kircubbin in 1835. About 1845 Felix and Sarah took the family to the Dearham, Cumberland, ENG area (presumably for work as this was the time of the potato famine). Sarah d. 1888 in Dearham, Cumberland, ENG but did not leave many clues as to relatives from County Down. If naming pattens are correct and their are no gaps, James is the second born son to Felix and Sarah but I have had no luck following up that. Another interesting point is that the family continued to utilize the RC chapel in Maryport for several generations; I would have thought McQuoid to be of Presbyterian origins but others online have indicated RC. I have another son, Thomas whose info indicated he was born in Co.Down so I am apt to dismiss that Felix and Sarah were traveling through the Ards on their way to England. I have seen those graveyard markers but with no parent or other given names to attach to Sarah I have been unable to go any farther. There appear to be a number of Keenan's and McQuoid's in the same general geographic area (Greyabbey, Kircubbin, Newtownards, Ballyhalbert) at about the same general time as Felix and Sarah. I have even tried to followup on the witnesses to John Keenan's baptism in Kircubbin in 1835 (Dorrian and McShane) and another researcher has indicated those families to which he is connected were likely from the Ballycranbeg area. Any good ideas how to get past this brickwall Philip? Best regards from Western NY Chuck Keenan ps: I have recently joined a DNA group to look at possible Keenan surname connections worldwide and also to review possible Ards Penninsula family connections.
