I'm trying to trace both the ancestors and descendants of Henry NIXON of Ballivor, Ireland. Ballivor is a small village in Co Meath, which didn't exist until about 1821. Family legend has it that Henry (my 3xgreat-grandfather) was 'of Ballivor', but since he was born around 1797,
he must have been born elsewhere. We don't know who his parents were, but I would love to find out. Rumour has it that there is a link to the NIXONs in the book FRENCH of Belturbet & NIXON of Fermanagh.
Henry married a Marianne GRIFFITHS and was the gamekeeper on the Earl of Darnley's estates around Athboy and as part of this was given a cottage at Ballivor by about 1847. He died at Ballivor in 1862.
He had at least 3 children, but there may have been more and the order of them is unknown, although family rumour is that the eldest was always called John. They were, John, who is believed to have gone to Kentucky, James (my
2xgreat-grandfather) and Kathy who married somebody MONTEITH/ MONTEATH.
James was born in 1830 and was very tall - 6'4". All of these NIXONs were staunch Protestants, but James married a tiny Catholic woman, Mary COMMENES and they had 11 children. James was the agent for the English landowner and was probably therefore disliked in that capacity. James died
in 1910 at Ballivor and is buried with his wife at nearby Killaconaghan churchyard.
Their children were:
John (my great-grandfather), born 1858, moved to England about 1878, is in London on the 1881 census and was married 2 or possibly 3 times. His last wife was Marian BARBER, whom he married in 1899 with whom he had 4 children,Marian (Marie), Marjorie Gray, Ivor Gray and Roy James. He died in 1947.
Mary Anne (or Marianne), born 1860, married an Alexander MACDONALD from Belfast. They had 3 children John, May and Marie.
Henry, born 1863 - left for Canada about 1891, married Margaret ? then they later returned and had a farm at Clonycavan,nr Ballivor and then returned to Canada.
Marcella, born 1865, unmarried and stayed in Ballivor. She died in 1933.
James (Jim), born 1867, went to Vancouver, Canada.
Ellen (Nellie), born 1869, married Arthur COFFEY and lived near Ballivor. She died in 1941. They had a son Thomas and daughter Jane (Jinty) who lived on a farm at Hodgestown, near Killucan, Ireland. I don't believe either child married or had children.
Frank, born 1871, married Julia ??, a Roman Catholic girl, and had 4 children, Irene, Chas, Harry & Lilly. THink he had a saw mill at Clonycavan nr Ballivor. He died in 1954.
Catherine (Kate), born 1873, married a ?John LEE), who when drunk shot his wife and himself, leaving 3 orphans, Jack, Frank and Anne-Marie. Jack & Frank both went into the navy. Kate is buried (in 1902) with her parents at Killaconaghan churchyard, Ireland.
Isabella, born 1876, went to Westfield College, and then Canada.
William, born 1880, married Maude PHILIIPS in 1908. He was an Army schoolmaster and then Education Officer. In 1935 they went to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). He died in 1952. They had 2 sons, John (Jack) and James.
Elizabeth, born 1883, the youngest of the 11. She stayed unmarried and in Ballivor and brought up her 2 orphaned newphews, Jack and Frank LEE. She ran the Post Office in Ballivor and was therefore in charge of the telephone
exchange which meant she knew all the local gossip 1st as she could listen in! She is also buried (in 1961) at Killaconaghan churchyard near Ballivor.
