Ralph, could you answer a question for me please? Does the Irish GRO have an alphabetical/chronological BMD index in the same way as the English ones? The reason I ask is that I have the deaths of several of my Hogans which give their dates of birth, but I am not 100% certain where they were born. If I were to send for copies of birth certificates giving these dates of birth, would they find them regardless of where they occurred? I have not yet sent for any of the certificates you mentioned because I was waiting for death and marriage certificates of some of the children of James Hogan. This revealed that Mary b. 28 August 1902 had the maiden name GEE. She gave her father as William Gee (deceased) on her marriage and at the birth of her son she gives her name as Gee. This indicates to me that James's first wife was a widow when they married and that her name would then have been Gee. She may have brought other children into the marriage, possibly including Ellen and Kathleen. William Gee was a sergeant in the East Kent Regiment but I can't find an English marriage (bearing in mind I don't know the spouse's maiden name) or a birth for Mary. Neither can I find marriages for Ellen or James. So once more I have come to a halt but have made progress albeit in an unexpected way. I feel my next step is to send for Mary Gee's birth certificate but this will only succeed if they are able to search by name and date and not by area. Many thanks, Colleen Notify Administrator about this message?
