I too am searching for the surname Quirk or Quirke from County Tipperary. I have little info at this point, but I'll give you what I have:

Margaret Quirk aka Margaret Quirke
married
John Looby aka John Luby

Lacking any date for this couple I'd *guestimate* that they were both born circa 1753 (or at least 20 years before the birth year of their dau Joanna Luby) and that they likely married circa 1772 (if dau Joanna Looby was their first born child).

John Looby and Margaret Quirk donated both land and money to help found the Ursuline Convent at Thurles, County Tipperary. This convent was founded by Anastasia Tobin (aka Sister Clare Ursula Tobin) in 1787. A free school w/ a small boarding school was also opened at this convent in 1796.

Children of Margaret Quirk and John Looby:

Joanna Luby aka Joanna Looby aka Sister Augustine Luby
Mary Luby aka Mary Looby aka Sister Angela Luby
Anne Luby aka Anne Looby aka Sister de Sales Luby
Rev. Thomas Luby aka Thomas Looby

Note: This couple may have had other children; these 4 are the only ones that I'm sure of though. Relatively sure that son Thomas Luby was born in Clerihan and the three daughters could also have been born there, but I have no confirmation of this fact OTHER than the fact that a John Looby is found on the 1766 Religious Census for Ballyclerahan (Clerihan).

NOTES ON JOANNA LUBY aka JOANNA LOOBY aka Sister Augustine Luby:

- Born c1773
- Entered Ursuline Convent Thurles, County Tipperary on 17 Jun 1794 at age 21 taking the name Sister Augustine Luby.
- Lived until at least July 12, 1929

NOTES ON MARY LUBY aka MARY LOOBY aka SISTER ANGELA LUBY

- Born c1775
- Entered Ursuline Convent Thurles, County Tipperary on 17 Jun 1794 at age 19 taking the name Sister Angela Luby.

NOTES ON ANNE LUBY aka ANNE LOOBY aka SISTER DE SALES LUBY

- Born after 1775 (youngest of the three sisters)
- Entered Ursuline Convent Thurles, County Tipperary in 1802 taking the name of Sister de Sales

NOTES ON REV. THOMAS LUBY aka THOMAS LOOBY

- Born circa 1779
- Native of Clerihan parish
- Educated in Carlow College, 1796 - 1802
- Ordained c.1802 (at Carlow College?)
- Roman Catholic Curate - Cashel, 1802 - 1805
- Roman Catholic Curate - Fethard, 1805 - 1808
- Parish Priest Knockainy 1808 - Apr 1812
- Parish Priest Ballingarry May 1812 - May 1820[?]
- Died in Ballingarry Jun 1819 or May 1820
- Buried beside "old" church Ballingarry; re-interred beside 'present' Church (one that was built 1820-1828)

Regarding that 1766 Religious Census for Ballyclerahan (Clerihan) it is interesting to note that there are 5 men with the surname HACKETT (out of a total of only 31 papists listed in this census):

Dave Hogan
Mich'l Bermingham
Jno Hackett
Ed. Hackett
Denis Bermingham
Will Beard
Nic. Hackett
Jno. Gihine
Andy Hackett
Darby Healy
Ed. Conway
Patt. Maxey
Rob. Mockler
Will Morressy
Tim Ryan. Elder
Tim Ryan
Ed Ryan
Andrew Russell
Patt. Henbury
Jno. Looby
Jno. Fogarty
Mich'l Kearney
Thos Welsh
Jas. Bales
Jno. Larkin
And. Hollaran
Robt. Morressy
Will Prendergast
Thos. Nowlan
Maur. Keating
Thos. Butler

Is it possible that these HACKETTs listed here are relatives of your Ann or Ellen Ann Hackett b abt. 1802?

It is also interesting to note that Rev. John Luby served as Curate in Fethard from 1805 - 1808 where you note that Fr. William Quirke was born in 1808.

The reason I am researching this Quirk and Luby family is that I believe that there is a connection to the following Luby family:

Michael Luby (a physician) married a Mary Fahy and had a son named Timothy Luby (Timothy born c1845). Timothy Luby married Ellen Shanahan on January 28, 1866 in Thurles, County Tipperary. Marriage performed by Rev. John Ryan; witnesses William Ryan and Bridget Murphy. Timothy Luby and Ellen Shanahan died young leaving 3 orphans behind: Michael and William J. Luby (twins born 1867) and Margaret "Maggie" Luby born 1869. These children have some connection to Joanna Luby aka Sister Augustine Luby of the Ursuline Convent / Presentation Convent and Orphanage. I can't yet unravel what this connection is however! Godparents of these three orphaned Luby children include the names Eliza Power(s), John Brophy, Margaret Ryan, Timothy Power, Catherine Hogan and Martin Ryan.

And you mentioned the Power group in your post also, so I'm rather intrigued here.

Sorry this is so long! If ANY of this rings any bells, please drop me a line!

Kathy Rhodes

Researching: Luby Looby Shanahan from Co Limerick and Co Tipperary
