I am very new to Jewish genealogy and would appreciate any pointers AND lots of patience with my ignorance. Due to immigration and complicated family issues, it is only relatively recently that we even discovered that my husband’s paternal line was Jewish. I am fairly familiar with working with American records and Christian church records, but am certainly unfamiliar with the records that may have been kept for these Jewish ancestors, especially in the Netherlands where they lived for all of the generations I am aware of (this based on research by another person.) Today I tried looking around teh website Jewishgen.org, but was not able to make any headway. I guess on specific question I have is how possible it is to figure out which tribe (if that is the correct term) of Israel this line comes from and, in general, how one goes about doing Jewish genealogy, what resources are available that I might overlook. The known Jewish line that my husband and, therefore, our sons come from is as follows: His father (living) was born in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada in 1927, just a few years after his parents came over from Amsterdam, Holland (the Netherlands.) Grandparents: Eduard Siegfried VAN CLEEF, b. 30 Aug 1899 in Amsterdam, d. 14 Sep 1979 in Tifton, Georgia, U.S.A. / married: Tjamkje TERPSTRA in 1922, in Amsterdam. She was not Jewish as far as her son knows. She was from a Friesian family, Friesland being an island off the coast of the Netherlands. She died 1998 in Florida, aged 103. Great-Grandparents: Jerijat / Jezajas VAN CLEEF, b. 13 April 1870, Zwartsluis, Overijssel, Holland, d. Feb 1943 in Auschwitz, Poland, aged 72. He had owned a bookstore in Amsterdam. He married: Tjamkje " Sientje " VAN DER WOUDE (1864 – Feb 1943) on 19 Jan 1897 in Amsterdam. She was the daughter of Alexander Jacobs VAN DER WOUDE and Sipkje "Sophia " DE HAAN. [Is Jezajas a Jewish name and Jerijat a Dutch name?] Great, great Grandparents: Salomon VAN CLEEF, b. 27 Jan 1822 in Zwartsluis, Overijssel, Holland, d. 20 Nov 1871 in Zwartsluis. He married: Rachel VAN LEER (1837 – 1871) on 5 May 1863 in Zwartsluis, she was the daughter of Levi Benjamins VAN LEER and Henderina Jacobus VAN DER WOUDE. 3rd Great Grandfather: Elias VAN CLEEF, b. 10 Sept 1767 in Zwartsluis, d. 29 Aug 1846 in Zwartsluis. He married: Kaatje VAN BEEK (1793 – 1866) the daughter of Philip Abraham VAN BEEK and Schoontje ISRAELS. 4th Great Grandparents: Abraham Salomons VAN CLEEF, b. 1740 in Hasselt, Holland, d. 22 March 1822 in Zwartsluis, Overijssel, Holland. He married: Rebecca ANDRIES, daughter of Andries NATHANS and Hesther JESAJAS. 5th Great Grandparents: Salomon Abrahams VAN CLEEF, b. 1690, d. aft 1789 (?) in Holland. He married: Saartien ABRAMS. I am pretty sure that this surname comes from the now-German town of Kleve (formerly Cleve in German) which lies near the border with the Netherlands and which is still spelled “Kleef” by the Dutch. So one would surmise that the family lived in or near that town (I believe it went back and forth in history between being German and being Dutch territory.) This is the best information I have at the moment. Thanks! ~Carol Notify Administrator about this message?
