Question about surname

My husband's great-grandmother was Jewish who married an unknown Ewald in New York during the late 1800s (not listed). I am still trying to find her maiden name and her line. I know she married first a Unknown Brady (had one daughter, Susan), then to an Ewald and had two more daughters (Clara & Lillian). To help me know where to search further, is Ewald a Jewish surname? Unknown Ewald died before 1900.

Katherine (Catherine, Kate)then married a John Fitzsimmons and had more children.

Her daughter Lillian Ewald married an Italian. None of the children look Italian--but this is another search.

Your help on the Ewald name will help guide me as to where to direct my research further. Thank you.
