Zlatica--Yes, I agree that the nationalities of the officiating priests may have played a part in how the surnames were spelled in church documents. "Conscriptions for Prague" lists a few persons with both names, RAUBIK and ROUBIK, so far, none of whom seem to be related to my Breburda family. This list of persons who moved to Prague is far from complete, however. I've thought my ancestors' name BREBURDA might also be a misspelling, perhaps of "Presburger" (as someone suggested), since I've seen "Bresburg/burger" etc. listed as a spelling for Presburger. The Martin Breburda for whom I have been searching was probably born about 1770-1780, since his grandson Josef was born in 1820. One family member has told me the Breburdas came from Slovakia and that there could be a Jewish connection, though I wonder if I will ever difinitively discover if this is true or not. The only "real" information I have so far is that in 1820 the family was residing in an area not far south of Prague--Martin's home was in a little village called Pischely (now Pysely), and I have read that it has also been a Jewish community. Therefore, I can believe that "some" mixing between Jewish and gentile families living there "may" "possibly" have occurred, even during the early 19th century. Even if no interfaith marriages ever took place, a Jewish man could have become the father of children by a gentile woman, or vice-versa. For example, the father of Josef Breburda, born 1820 in Pischely, was listed as "unknown" and "might" have been Jewish. Of course I have no proof. His grandmother was a Raubik but then I guess that's still no real proof, either, that she was Jewish.
