Since he died in Kansas City I checked the Missouri State Archives website and found Joseph's death certificate, which you can download and view. It says he was born 25 Dec 1832 in Ohio. Father's name was William C. Larwill, b. England; mother's name was Susan Christmas, b. US. Burial place is Wooster, OH. Informant was Paul H. Larwill.

I went back and checked some census records. The 1850 census lists the family in Wooster, Wayne, OH and William Larwill is clerk of the Supreme Court at that time.
