Location, Location, Location !
Even if your ancestors are long gone but still there should be some paperwork that you can gather and locate a name of a town they were born in.
If your ancestor had social security numbers or were naturalized citizen than those forms would have a name of a town. http://ssdi.rootsweb.com
Take a look in Ellis Island website. You need to register but no money. www.ellisislandrecords.org After you register, try locating the manifest with this site :
www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellis.html
