Henry was born in 1833 in Newberry Co. South Carolina, moved to Perry County before 1840 with his father, Henry (1799-12 Jan 1841 Perry Co) and mother Mary (or Polly) (1788- (either 1841 or after 1863, depending on who you ask)). The younger Henry had several siblings (Delilah, John 'William', Martha, Mary, and George 'Michael'). The Elder Henry was a son of John Lagrone, who married Agnes (probably Agnes Hartley). This John is generally believed to be a son of Tobias Lagrone who emmigrated to Newberry Co. SC from Schoenau Germany with HIS father Laurenz in 1752. I'm sorry I can't be more specific - John and his children are a real jigsaw puzzle, with a number of missing pieces so this is the best guess the evidence currently supports. What we DO know is that John, and therefore the older Henry as a child, moved from Newberry County to Edgefield Co, SC between 1800 and 1810. Some of this family gradually trickled over to Alabama between 1820 and 1840. There they met up with the children of other sons of Tobias, and settled (some for a few years before moving on further west). The elder Henry patented land there in Perry Co. in 1835 (Northeast of Marion, not far from a place now called "Perry Ridge"). Eventually the younger Henry got a section not far from his father's. It was possibly the younger Henry who later moved near a place called Tucker's Store at the northern part of the county. Just before the Civil War, one of the Henry's (which one I can't say, since I haven't gotten those Census pages) owned a slave (name and gender unknown). I should point out that there is evidence that there may be at least one other Henry in Alablama at the time, but it's not conclusive). Henry was part of the "Perry County Home Guard" ("Moore's Co. of the Perry Guards"), which was formalized into Company C of the 4th Volunteer Militia (10 April 1862, for a 90 day stint - that later was expanded greatly. He was a member of H company, 4th (or 40th) Alabama Infantry when he reached Vicksburg, where he was hit 18 Jan 1863. There is a family tradition that he may have died as late as August in a hospital Henry apparently had 4 children, all male (Henry Posey LaGrone, William ("Willie") Mortan LaGrone, Adam Fayette Lagrone, and Asberry C Lagrone). Curiously Asberry is listed in later census material as having been born in 1865, which is either an error in the census (like THAT never happens), or else we don't have all the story there.
