When lebanese people started immigrating to USA back in the 1800, very few of them could speak or write english. so at their arrival, the officer gave them the family name he found suitable, and most of the time their family name was the father s first name but americanised. I know lot of the descendants of the first pioneers who lost their real family name. a guy with the name of yousef boutros hashem, where Boutros is the father first name, became joseph peters; joseph for yousef and peters for boutros; hashem does not exist anymore. and so on.
