John, I have a copy of an interview with Mr. Leonard(not sure which one) dated Feb 28, 1951 by Dana Wright. This is it as typed.
Frederick Leonard lived about 20 miles west of Indianapolis, possibly a little north of Pittsboro. This had been the family home for a long time, as he went from that community to the civil war. He served in the 79 Indiana Volunteers, Co. K. He served through nearly all the war. Had some yellow jaundice and was home on furlough, then went back again. He was a farmer by trade. After the war he moved to Missouri in a covered wagon in 1866. The mother went and two or three children. The father had been there before, possibly in the Army, so they knew where they were going. It was near Sedalia. He was on a farm there for several years. They moved back to Indiana in a covered wagon again in 1875 when George was 4 years old. The team of mares they drove home with were both over 30 yrs. old. They crossed the Mississippi at St. Louis. On the return trip, Jack's brother, Prince, was one yr. old as they crossed the Mississippi. They relocated in the vicinity of Pittsboro and went into farming. The interview goes on then to say more about Prince, Jack, and George going to Cando, ND. My Grandfater , George was born in MO, and married in IN
I will dig thru these mounds of papers I have and see if I can find anything else. Dave
