DEATH TAKES OLDEST RESIDENT OF CITY NEAR 105TH BIRTHDAY
Death has taken the oldest resident of this city.
John Lucas, 104, died at 6:15 o'clock last night at the home of his son-in-law-and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Lucas, of Elm Street.
Almost until the very last, Mr. Lucas remained active enough to dress and feed himself. He was fond of telling about having gone rabbit hunting when he was more than 90 years old.
The centenarian was a native of Carter County but had lived here many years. He was born March 20, 1862, a son of Manuel and Rachael Tyrie Lucas.
He was emploed for more than 30 years at the January and Wood Company, until he retired some 20 years ago.
His wife, Mrs. Alpha Montgomery Lucas, died December 26, 1964, at an advanced age. A daughter, Mrs. Maysel Jordan, died three months to the day after her mother, on March 16, 1965.
Besides the son with whom he resided, Mr. Lucas leaves two other sons, Manuel Lucas also of Maysville, and Sherman Lucas of Dover. Other survivors include 20 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Knox Funeral Home. Rev. Lonnie Bradley, pastor of the Central Baptist Church, will officiate and burial will be in the Maysville Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 until 9 o'clock Tuesday

MR. LUCAS, WHO PASSED HIS 100TH BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY, HAS BEEN BEDFAST AT THEIR HOME ON THE GERMANTOWN ROAD FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS.
MRS. LUCAS, WHO ALSO HAD BEEN BEDFAST FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS, HAD BEEN ILL IN HEALTH FOR MANY YEARS.
THE DECEASED WAS THE MOTHER OF SHERMAN LUCAS, A WELL KNOWN RETIRED FARMER, WHO OWNED AND OPERATED THE LUCAS BARBER SHOP FOR 18 YEARS.
A KIND AND SOFT SPOKEN WOMAN, MRS. LUCAS POSSESSED A DWARM NATURE AND WAS HELD IN HIGH ESTEEM BY ALL WHO KNEW HER. DEVOTED TO HER FAMILY, SHE WAS A NEIGHBORLY PERSON. NEWS OF HER DEATH, ALTHOUGH NOT SUDDEN, WILL BE LEARNED WITH SINCERE REGRET.
A NATIVE OF CARTER COUNTY, MRS. LUCAS, WHO SPENT MOST OF HER LIFE IN THIS COMMUNITY, WAS BORN MARCH 20, 1876, A DAUGHTER OF THE LATE JOHN AND RACHAEL BURRIS MONTGOMERY.
SURVIVING, IN ADDITION TO HER HUSBAND AND SON, ARE TWO OTHER SONS, MANUEL LUCAS AT HOME: ALBERT LUCAS, OF MAYSVILLE, AND TWO DAUGHTERS, MRS. HARTMAN NASH, AND MRS. MACEL LUCAS, BOTH OF MAYSVILLE. ALSO SHE LEAVES 17 GRANDCHILDREN, 24 GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, AND 6 GREAT GREAT GRANDCHILDEN.

AS A YOUNG MAN, MR LUCAS WAS EMPLOYED AT THE JANUARY AND WOOD COMPANY. HE SUFFERED SEVERE INJURIES ALMOST 30 YEARS AGO WHEN HE FELL FROM A FREIGHT TRAIN, AND HAD BEEN UNABLE TO WORK SINCE THAT TIME.
THE DECEASED WAS BORN FEBRUARY 20, 1900 A SON OF JOHN AND ALPHA MONTGOMERY LUCAS. HIS FATHER, THE LATE JOHN LUCAS DIED IN 1967 AT THE AGE OF 104.
SURVIVORS INCLUDE BROTHERS, ALBERT LUCAS, OF ELM STREET, AND SHERMAN LUCAS, OF ROUTE 1, MAYSVILLE, AND A SISTER, MRS. W.H. (MAE) NASH, OF THIS CITY.
