In Sheila Mallory Smith's work on Mallory family history, she several times mentions a certain "Noble Collection" as a source. Unfortunately, the book I have been using at the Society of Genealogists in London does not provide a bibliography and a proper understanding of this reference is important to me in coming to a better understanding of the parentage of Sir Richard Mallory, Lord Mayor of the City of London, who must be of the Papworth St. Agnes line, but cannot be a younger brother of Sir William Mallory, as data I have uncovered when combined with that already provided by Mrs. Mallory Smith would suggest he is at least five or six years older. I would appreciate any information anyone might have on the "Noble Collection" reference. Concerning myself, I am an academic on a one year sabbatical in London and am working primarily at the British Library, the Library of the Institute of History of the University of London, the Library of the Society of Genealogists and, of course, the National Archives. My purpose is to untangle the badly entangled life histories of Sir Thomas Mallory, Knight of Newbold Revel and Thomas Mallory, Esquire of Papworth St. Agnes. In particular, it seems to me that the likelihood of the knight being a member of the 1449 and 1450 parliaments is close to zero, as is participation in the Scottish campaign of 1462. The esquire would be a better option in each of the above cases. I would also suggest that the Lieutenant of the Tower of London during the 1460s and initial gaoler of Henry VI, was more likely to have been an otherwise unrecorded younger brother of the esquire rather than either a brother, cousin, or uncle of the knight. Obviously, in finding a likely answer to one historical puzzle, one opens the doors to others. Over the last six months, I have been building on the work of Mrs. Smith and Professor Field ("The Life and Times of Sir Thomas Mallory") to untangle one step further Mallory history throughout the middle ages and have made satisfying progress. In the process, I have found that, despite what one might think on account of my Japanese nationality, I descend both from the Lord Mayor, as well as from Ala, the daughter of the Anketin Mallory of Kirkby Mallory who was granted lands in Sudborough, co. Northampton, by William la Zouche, the Archbishop of York. Thank you in advance for your consideration. Hikaru Notify Administrator about this message?
