For Years I had no idea what my GrGrGrandmothers maiden name was. All I knew from censuses was she was born in NY, her father in Germany and her mother in Ireland.

While poking into some newpaper archives looking for something else (of course!) I came across her death announcement. Not only did I learn her maiden name was Markle, I had her birthdate, her birth place, and her parents names.

Further research showed her parents went by Markly/Markley. It seems the children dropped the 'Y' and became known as Markle.

Morris Markley b abt 1824 Wurtemburg Germany d bef Apr 1873
married
Catherine Carter b abt 1828 Ireland d Apr 1973 (found funeral announcement in 3 May 1873 Evening Gazette)

Morris was listed as a Grocer in 1860 and a Tavern Keeper in 1870

Children (all born in Pond Eddy):

Mary b 1850
Joseph b 1851 d bef 1910
Peter b 1854 d abt 1930
Caroline b 23 May 1855 d 22 Jun 1932
Pauline b 1856
Anna b 1859
Sabrina b 1862
Katy b 1864

Caroline married James McGinn b abt 1845 Ireland d bet 1886 and 1889. They resided in Shohola PA James worked as a Stone Cutter/Quarryman- Blue Stone with Caroline's two brothers Peter and Joseph.

Caroline and James had 3 children - all born in NY - Bernard in Barryville, the daughters possibly too.

Sarah b 1882 d 19 Mar 1963
Anna b Oct 1883 d aft 1932
Bernard b 26 Oct 1886 d 12 Nov 1969

After James McGinn died, Caroline married James ONeil b Feb 1842 d bef 1932. They resided in Middletown. 1900 census shows them as being married 10 years so wedding was about 1890.

They had 1 daughter - Mary b Oct 1893 d aft 1932.

Joseph Markle remained in Pond Eddy. He and his wife Margaret had 10 children. In 1900 they had 2 grandchildren living with them - Bessie and Edward Martin.

Peter Markle also remained in Pond Eddy. He and his wife Mary had 6 children.

Most of the two boys' children seem to have moved to Port Jervis - along with Joseph's widow Margaret - before the 1930's.

Pall bearers for Caroline Markle McGinn ONeil were listed as :

James McGinn (Bernard's son- her Grandson)
Charles Shaffer (Sarah's Son - her Grandson)
James Stall
Walker Lynch

Were James Stall and Walker Lynch nephews? Grandsons of her sisters?

What happened to all the Markle Girls? Who did they marry?

Looking for any information on decendants of Morris and Catherine.
