In 1900, Anniston Calhoun Co. AL there is a: Richard F Matheney 37 AL AL SC md 4 years to this wife Clara A Matheney 25 wife (obv a 2nd wife/3 children dead) Ida F Matheney 15 dau Richard T Matheney 12 son Mahaley Gidley 61 aunt SC ENG SC I found him on the 1870 census in the same area, living with his widowed mother Mary J. Mattheny, born SC about 1837, next door to his grandparents James and Elizabeth Gidley.( Mahala Gidley still lived with her parents, and I assume she never married.) The best way to look for this family in 1870 is to look for the grandfather, James Gidley, born Eng, then look just below his entry. I don't have access to the 1870 census anymore or I would be more specific. I don't know if his father died in the Civil War, or from other causes. However, it appears that Richard thought his father was born in Alabama. The marriage record as I found it from Ancestry.com,is in error about the way his fathers last name was spelled. As records were handwritten, it's possible that the extractor of this record could not adequately read the last name. Mary Gidley Spouse: J F Mathews Marriage Date: 9 Mar 1862 County: Calhoun State: Alabama Source information: Hunting For Bears In 1880, the family had moved to White Plain, Calhoun Co. I don't think Mary J. Matheny is really 41, unless she is a twin to her sister Mahala Gidley. Richard F. Matheny 18 AL blank SC Mary E. Matheny 18 wife AL SC ? Mary J. Matheny 41 SC ENG SC Anyway, just throwing this out to you in case some other family is missing a J F. Matheny. Since the J might stand for Jasper, and he would be about the same age as his wife, or born in the late 1830's, this might be yours. Notify Administrator about this message?
