I have been researching my great great grandfather, Sidney E. (Eliphlet or Earl) NEAL, b. 10/02/1834 in Canada. I was told that his parents came to Canada from Ireland, but I do not know their names. I also do not know of any siblings of Sidney NEAL. I was told that the "NEAL" name was was changed when the family left Canada for the US. The name "NEAL" had a prefix that was dropped, we always thought it was "O", but now I am wondering if it was "Mc". The family went from Canada to NY about 1840's, then to Wisconsin, Illinois (Jefferson County, 1859, Winnebago County 1864) , Iowa, Minnesota (Rice County 1870, Stearns County 1880)and Kansas (Jefferson County) where Sidney NEAL died in 1901. I have found a "Eliphant NEAL" in Jefferson County, Kansas Census for 1860. I am wondering if this is connected to my Sidney NEAL since he had a son born in Jefferson County in 1859 named "James WESTCOTT NEAL" my g-grandfather). Next door to "Eliphant NEAL" on the 1860 census is "James WESTCOTT". I can find no other records of "Eliphant NEAL". The census states that he was born in NY about 1800. Next, I find Sidney E. NEAL in Stearns county, Minnesota on the 1880 census. I also find Joseph McNEAL and William McNEAL in Stearns County about the same time (Joseph is on the census, William died in 1879). Both are listed as being born in NB Canada about 1827-1830. Both list their parents as being born in Ireland. I think it is possible that their may be a connection between the NEAL and MCNEAL surname. I was wondering if any McNEAL researchers have come across the names Sidney (Sydney), Eliphlet(Eliphant, Eli or any variation). Other surnames connected are possibly PURDY and/or WESTCOTT. Migration pattern is Ireland (before 1800), Canada (1800 to 1840's/1850),NY (1840s/1850),Wisconsin(1850s), Illinois (1859-1864), Iowa (1850s?), Minnesota (1870-1885), Kansas(1885-1901). Anyone with possible connections? Valerie VLH_60@msn.com Notify Administrator about this message?
