McNeal/McNeel & others

Is there anyone here that can explain the different spellings of the name McNeal/McNeel families? I have been finding so many different variations of this surname that now I'm confused! It seems that a number of these families had some kind of falling out back in the 1800's, which isn't uncommon of course.
And that a number of them changed the spelling or by mistake it was written wrong on census records. I have been researching a McNeal family that lived back in Baltimore, MD circa the 1800's and a number of them moved around the country-some lived in PA, Ohio, Tennessee. Many of the McNeal men were doctors.

And they all seem to have the same first name: Daniel(especially Daniel!), James, Frank, Robert, etc.

I know that this is a strange question to ask, many people I have contacted get upset with me over it. Does anyone know anything about the terrible family feud that caused such a big fuss back in the 1800's? That even today, there are McNeal/McNeel families that refuse to talk about it?
