Hi Tina,

The spelling variations could be from personal preference and how the name was written down by the enumerator. My McNeill ancestor Robert McNeill (who was from Scotland) came to Nova Scotia (Masstown). In the book by Thomas Miller my Robert is written down as Robert McNeal, Masstown, 1821 (he is listed as the husband of Mary Crowe/Crow). But later the family spelled the name MacNeil, MacNeill, McNeil, McNeill. I'm not sure about a family feud in the 1800s. It could also just be from a language that a certain McNeal/McNeel spoke. One could have spoken Gaelic and the other English/Scots which would make pronunciation different... which does affect spelling of names and words.

Cheers,
Justin
