Hello Justin, One participant in the study descends from the same MacNeil as you do. Yes we have representation from Colonsay and Gigha. We also have a good representation from Barra. Since you are a MacNeil you could participate. Your results can then be compared to those that we already have. I have tested with a number of 4th and 5th cousins of mine and we were able to prove that we share a common ancestor. Our oral history already suggested this. With Barra MacNeils we have been able to identify three main Y-DNA signatures. We are able to sort families from Barra into groups based on test results. For example, I know that my father and my mother's father (I'm a double MacNeil) descend from two different branches of the MacNeils of Barra as my mother's cousin's results do not match my own. A researcher suspected that her ancestor belong to a branch of my family. Her brother's results showed that she does not belong to my MacNeils. We are lucky because we now have a relatively large sample of MacNeils to compare results with. The more MacNeils in the project, the better the chances of a match. MacNeils from the Southern US are not coming back as matches for the Barra MacNeils. Generally, MacNeils do not descend from Neil of the Nine Hostages based on results so far. No MacNeils from Barra match the O'Neils of Ireland so far. Vince Notify Administrator about this message?
