Hello Sandra,
I believe the O'Handley family that you descend from is on page 794 of To the Hill of Boisdale. You will see one Catherine listed there but there were actually two. I know that one of these Catherine's married a John MacNeil but I am having trouble with her because of a similar family in the Sydney Mines area and I can't sort this out.
Firstly, was your Catherine O'Handley born at Long Island or at Boisdale? These Catherine's lived at Long Island.
On the 7th of January, 1875 at St. Joseph's Church in North Sydney a John McNeil married Catherine O'Handley d/o Dougal O'Handley and Margaret O'Neil (I believe she was McNeil) of Boularderie. John and Catherine McIntosh stood for them. John's parents were not listed and I can not find this marriage in the NS vitals.
There was a John MacNeil from the Boisdale area who married a Sarah MacIntyre who was living in the Sydney Mines area. Sarah MacIntyre died young and he remarried a Catherine. I suspect he married a Catherine O'Handley (I could be wrong). I don't know for sure.

The first three children above were from John's marriage to Sarah MacIntyre. The last three are from his wife Catherine. Now you see the names Dougal and Sarah (Just like your John and Catherine who you say had a Dougal and Sarah who died in infancy. I found a Dougal McNeil in the NS vitals born at Syndey Mines in 1875. His parents were given as John and Jane (O'Handley) MacNeil and they were married at Sydney Mines in January of 1875. I think this might have been the John and Catherine above (could Jane be a mistake?). In 1881 we have John with Catherine and a Dougal MacNeil born the correct time.
Are you sure the Douglas and Sarah that you have who died young aren't this Douglas and Sarah born to this other couple?

Notice the names of the first couple of children.
I placed this marriage based on the fact that we have a John with these three children from Ms. McIntyre who died in 1874. He remarries in 1875, has three more children with an O'Handley and then the names Dougal and Sarah.
Now, to make matters worse we have a third Catherine O'Handley from Long Island born about 1855. She also married a MacNeil and had a son named Douglas (maybe a form for Dougal?).
Her death record does not list her parents' names. So we have another Catherine O'Handley:
