Thank you, Vince, for your help. My Roderick (Mo: Sarah McMillin, b. Barra, d. PEI), a Catholic, married a Brown in Barra where 5 children were born; the youngest was Ellen b. 1826, d. 1912 who married Dugold MacDonald. After Brown's death, Roderick, the children, (and it would appear his mother) migrated to Lot 41, PEI. He was not yet remarried at the time the Lot 41 census was taken. He was a shipmaker/farmer,oysterer, fisherman, etc. He was not part of the migration of many McNeils from Barra to PEI in 1792 and was not the Roderick McNeill who helped build the church at Grand Riverin 1810. (Source: news clipping). In PEI my Roderick married Sarah MacKinnon (there were Barra MacKinnons who had migrated earlier: I don't really know her heritage). They had about 12 children, the eldest being my direct ancestor Joseph McNeil, b. about 1840/41 on Lot 16, near the village of McNeill's Mill. Two other sons were Daniel, b. 1847 and Stephen, b. 1852. These are recorded at St. Patrick's Church at Grand River, PEI. Other children would have been baptised in another church across the Grand River if born in late fall-early spring.
Roderick appeared to have remained in Lot 16. He apparently conveyed 301/2 acres at Lot 16 to an Alecander McNeill 8/12/1840 after Confederation when tenants could purchase the land they previously had to lease. The eldest son Joseph (above) moved to St. John, NB in 1863, marrying a NS woman, Margaret Ann MacMillan, June 16, 1868 at St. John. The only other record of significance is a deed of land on the shores of Grand River to Roderick who then leased it with Joseph in 1873. Possibly this was not the same Roderick, but a cousin or whatever.
I am interested in purchasing a DNA swab kit to bring to a family reunion in late July. My 14 yo nephew has shown some interest in family history, is a direct male descendant of Roderick, so I'm hoping he's appropriate for the DNA project. If you could guide me further (I know the website, I just mean any tips) I would greatly appreciate it. Hope this info also helps out some other researchers. Marcia.
