I did a quick search of the 1911 Census which has just recently become available online. If your grandmother was born in 1907, that’s where you’ll find her. The website is
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/Test6.jsp?province=Nova%20Scotia

I did a quick search and came up with a Katie-May age 2, a Katherine ,age 8 and another Catherine age 8, all in Inverness County. I know that you said your grandmother was born in 1907 but there are often great discrepencies in ages on the census returns so I always take them with “a grain of salt”. The Katie May seems to be the likeliest candidate. Her family is living in River Denys (or Dennis) and is as follows

Archie McPhail – head – born March 1845
Maggie Ann McPhail – wife - born March 1878
John Philip McPhail – son – born 1905
Sarah Jane McPhail –dau.- born 1906
Katie May McPhail – dau. – born 1909
John Archie McPhail – brother – born 1854

The quickest way to find these people on the 1881 Census is to go to
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

There I found the following family also in River Dennis:

Finlay McPhail – widow – head - age 74 – born Scotland – Presbyterian
Archy McPhail. – age 36 - born NS – farmer - Presbyterian
Mary McPhail – age 33 – born NS –
Alexander McPhail – age 29 – born NS – miner
John Archy McPhail – age 27 – born NS – miner
Duncan K McPhail – age 25 – born NS – farmer
Jessie McPhail – age 23 - born NS
Christy McPhail – age 20 – born NS
Katie Maggie McPhail – age 8 –born NS
Mary McPhail – age 54 – born Scotland (probably a sister to Finlay)

You can do the same research with the other Katherines that I mentioned above . Do you have any family traditions with names-- is your family Presbyterian or Catholic.—these details could help you zero in on the right family. Either way it would appear that you are definitely looking at the River Dennis area of Inverness County.
The Cape Breton Genealogy site is

There is a fantastic amount of information online there and you can also access names addresses, etc. of people who might be able to make some contacts for you.
