This might help someone.

The Texas Republican
Marshall, Harrison County, Texas

Saturday, September 6, 1862
We are pained to learn that JOHN A. MCPHAIL, a member of the Cloughand Hill Avengers, Clark’s Regiment, died at Bright Star, Lafayette County, Arkansas on the 28th of August. His disease was inflammation of the brain. His age was 23 years five months. Just in the dawn of manhood, when life was opening before him and when he hoped to serve his country and to aid in driving out the invaders, he was suddenly and unexpectedly called away. He was an exemplary young man and if he had lived would have a useful citizen. His father, DAVID MCPHAIL, a worthy citizen of this place, has had the misfortune to lose tow sons in this war. A younger boy, W. H. MCPHAIL, died at Chicago. He was one of the young heroes at Fort Donelson and escaped death from the battle, only to fall by the hand of disease (died at the P.O.W. camp in Illinois).
