In Reply to: 1809 Madison Co., AL Census John McPhail listed along with MAY, MALLOY, others by Lynda Campbell of 1055

I've been looking into my husband's McPhaill ancestors and believe that the John McPhail listed in the 1809 Census is either John McPhaill, Sr. (b. abt 1750, Scotland m. Barbara Malloy) or his son, John McPhaill, Jr. (b. abt. 1780, Scotland, m. Catherine Gilchrist). John Sr. died in Madison, Alabama abt. 1820. John Jr. also lived in Madison, Alabama, died in Benton, Ark abt. 1852.

Later census material indicates that Elizabeth McPhaill (b. 1822, Madison, Alabama m. Joshua May) was the daughter of John Jr.'s son, Robert A. McPhaill (b 1799, Robeson, N.C., m. Deborah Fowler).

I suspect, but have no proof, that the Malloys shown in this census are related to Daniel Malloy and his sister, Barbara Malloy McPhaill. The research I've seen indicates that Daniel Malloy emigrated with Barbara and her husband John McPhaill, Sr., from Scotland to Lumberbridge, N.C. around 1783.

Robert McPhaill later moved his family to Fannin Co., Texas where he was granted land for service in the Mexican War.

Hope this helps.
