I am looking for information on the McPhail family of Northeast Maine. These McPhails settled in Perry, Maine and Calais, Maine. The census indicates we begin to see the McPhail family in Perry, Maine in the Census of 1820 for Maine. In that census you have a John McPhail with a large family and living near him a Duncan McFaild. John McPhail was quite old at that time and evidently he had a son John McPhail (in later census) and believe he had a son Duncan McPhail who was Duncan McFaild in the census of 1820.Duncan married Martha (Lovicy) Mahar (born about 1795 in Maine and died between 1870 and 1880 in Calais, Maine. Duncan was born about 1792 in New Brunswick and died Aug. 1, 1868 in Calais, Maine. I have found 6 children for the couple three of which I found:
Unknown McPhail-male- between 1815-1820
Eleanor McPhail- female- between 1815-1820
John McPhail- born about 1822 in Maine; died bet. 1880-1900 in Maine
William McPhail -born about 1828 in Me; died bet. 1880-1900
Unknown McPhail- male-born bet. 1825-1830
Unknown McPhail- Male- born bet. 1830-1830
Eleanor married David Roberts on Dec 23, 1845 in Calais, Maine
John McPhail married Dorinda Carlow and had 4 children by my count. By 1830 Duncan McPhail had moved to Calais, Maine and remained there for the rest of his life. William McPhail never married but that leaves three other children (maybe more) I can't find.
The elder John McPhail seems to have died bet. 1820-1830 in Perry, Maine and had other children male and female. John McPhail (born May 1787 in Maine; died Sept. 6, 1875 in Perry, Me) married two spouses. The first I don't know but he had his elder children by her. Many lived in Perry, Maine. John's 2nd wife was Martha (?) (born about 1827 in NB). John had a large 2nd family by her. One of his children was Ferdinand McPhail (born Jan. 1850). John jr. lived briefly in Charlotte, Maine and moved back to Perry, Me. by 1860. Ferdinand married Anna Linscot (born July 1856) and had many children one of which was Nina McPhail that married my great Uncle Robert Mahar. Robert died young (influenza at sea) and Nina married again.Nina and Harold had two children Harold (died young) and Pauline (born about 1912) who survived and had a family.
I have the census info on the McPhails in Maine from 1820 to 1930.What I don't know is who's kids are who's.
My interest is not the McPhails but the Mahar's and the descendants of Edmund Mahar. Both John and Duncan fall into that category and lived within walking distance of Edmund's descendants in Perry, Maine.
