McQuillan name changed to KILLEN?

I have reached a brick wall in my family research. I am seeking information on my g grandfather. Bryan KILLEN b c1820 in Canada m Mary MURPHY b c1827 Ireland; date and place of marriage unknown; lived in Grantham Twp., Lincoln Co. Ontario Canada in the 1850s. Mary is widowed by 1861.

Here is my question:

Has anyone heard of McQuillan being changed or shortened to KILLEN or GILLAN?

I can find no trace of parents or siblings of Bryan. Could it be possible the name was changed?
