We have a family history from 1911 which states our Revolutionary War ancestor, William Permar, who died in 1779, 'fought alongside Layfayette.'I have tracked troop movements and it does appear Lafayette accompanied by Washington and Gen. Green were in the area of Greensborough during this period of August-September 1777. In fact, Greensborough was named after General Green . The British landed 19,000 English soldiers, previously camped in New York at Elk Head, Maryland, in preparation to take Philadelphia. Gen. Washington camped so close to the enemy it is said he did so at great personal risk of being captured. After Washington, Green and Lafayette, accessed the British troops they then circled around and back into Pennsylvania, placing Continential troops along the Brandywine Creek in preparation of the British march toward Philadelphia. At the time there was much speculation and some fear that if Philadelphia was taken so the war may be lost.Indeed, the Battle of Brandywine was lost and Philadelphia did fall to the British but the war was not lost!
Does anyone else has any knowledge from either family or, if you grew up there, other sources, of stories from the area of Caroline Couty or of soldiers of this area and their participation during the Revolutionary War? Please do post if you can add anything. Thank you.
