My Genealogy Brick Wall! I am in search of the ancestral line of DANIEL NANCE of Brunswick County, North Carolina. I know now that he was killed at the battle of Fort Fisher in the Civil War. I found him on the census of 1850 living in the home of "Artha Benton & Rebecca", (his inlaws),living in the Shallotte district. In 1850 he shows on the census as being 20 years old and Martha, his wife shows as being 19 years old In the 1860 census what I think is this same DANIEL NANCE shows as being 37 years old and his wife Martha is 36. They have children of JOSPEH W NANCE (9), JAMES E NANCE (7), ISADORA NANCE (5), and what in penmanship looks like Nashville, but I know to be MARSHAL H (1). and I know that the H. in Marshal H. is for HOLMES. In the 1870 census ISADORA NANCE (13) is living in the home of ARTHER BENTON (67) & ELIZABETH R. (61). These are presumably ISADORA's grandparents as noted from the 1850 census. WHERE DID DANIEL NANCE WHO DIED AT FORT FISHER COME FROM BEFORE 1850? I have found other Daniel Nance's in NC, but birthdates never seem to fit. Also in the 1870 census of Brunswick County, Shallotte Township, there is a MARTHA(32) living in the home of JONATHAN GORE (30)......they have children in the home of MARSHAL (10), Daniel (8), Ellen (6), and Ellen (4). All the children "appear" to be GORE's. IS THIS WHERE MARTHA BENTON REMARRIED? In the 1880 Census, MARTHA GORE (47), has only ELLEN NANCE (16) living in her home. They are next door neighbors of MARSHAL NANCE (21), and his wife EMMA J.(19).....I know EMMA J's maiden name to have been HEWETT. DANIEL NANCE & "PATSY" MARTHA BENTON are listed as parents on the death certificate of DANIEL J. NANCE (March 15, 1861-February 22, 1937). DANIEL NANCE & "PATSY" MARTHA BENTON are listed as parents on the death certificate of MARSHAL HOLMES NANCE (February 22, 1860-April 18, 1944) ISADORA NANCE(b. Dec. 15, 1857) is known to have married ROBERT M. LITTLE (June 5, 1850-October 24, 1926). The 1900 census of Horry County, South Carolina, East Simpson Creek Township lists ROBERT M. LITTLE as head of household # 16. He and his wife ISA D. show to have been married for 27 years with 11 of 12 births still living. His mother in law "MARTHA" age 65 is shown living with him. Where did THIS DANIEL NANCE who married "Patsy" Martha Benton and died at Fort Fisher come from? What are correct birth and death dates for both of them? Civil War records show Private Daniel Nance to have died in battle. What happened to Jonathan Gore (Martha's theoretical 2nd hubby in the 1870 census)? I can find nothing on the children Joseph and James from this Nance-Benton union other than their listing in the 1860 census. HELP!!!!!
