The phrase "Stand his ballot"

I have an obituary of Robert Kirtley which said "He could relate many stories, too. about the times of the Battle of Waterloo and the French Wars, and his having to "stand his ballot" for a soldier.

Does an know what the phrase "stand his ballot" means?

Thanks

Abby
