Genealogy usually requires serious documentation. However many immigrant families brought stories of ancestors whose deeds are remembered, but whose names are forgotten. Such is the case of my wifes 3rd great grandfather who was in the Anhalt Battalion during the Napoleanic wars.
In 1906 Ernst Paul Reinhard emmigrated to Galveston Texas from Chemnitz which is in the German State of Sachsen Anhalt. He left to his family many photographs of brothers and a father in law in spiked helmets and postcards in German. But he also left the story of his Great Grandfather who marched with Napoleon as part of the Anhalt Battalion. This Reinhard soldier was 6 feet 9 inches tall. A story that sounds credible when one meets a German doctor that is 6 feet 7 inches tall that is my wifes second cousin who is also a Reinhard.
The Anhalt Battalion wore green uniforms with rose colored trim. The 5th Regiment served in the Prussian campaign of 1807 Though I have not been able to determine if they were at the battle of Jena-Aurstadt in 1806. In 1809 they took part in the Tyrolian campaign, and also in the Spanish campaign through 1811. In 1812 the Anhalt battalion was in the Russian campaign and fought at Borodino. In 1813 They were at Dazig. The regimental flag was emblazoned with the Anhalt arms.
