Looking for my Nash cousins. The Nash Family of Saranac, NY This information comes from various sources. It is being presented as information only and as the basis for further research. Much of it has not been verified. It has been copyrighted, but permission is given for use for genealogical research as long as a fee is never charged for its use. I have much more information on these families. If you have a connection please contact me at mmayn93990 at aol dot com or mygenes48 at yahoo dotcom and I will be happy to share additional sources and information on descendants. Some of the information was sent to me by Anna Perras in January 1970. She indicated it was found in books in the barn at 98 Oak Street, Plattsburgh, NY "after Uncle Edmund died last year." [This would have been Edmund Nash, son of Robert F. Nash.] There is a citation to the Genealogical and Family History of Northern New York Compiled under the editorial supervision of William Richard Cutter, A.M. Published in 1910 by Lewis Historical Publishing Company, New York. I don’t know what portion of the information Anna sent came from the history and what portion was from family information. Other information came from Catherine A. “Cassie” Coffey, who put together a Nash family history, and from other Nash cousins over the years. The Immigrants Four brothers and two sisters of the Nash family came from Bandon, County Cork, Ireland in 1845 or 1849 on the ship Urena. If they all came together the date was probably 1845 as two of the brothers had children born during the Atlantic crossing in 1845. One story is that the father preceded his family to the US but was killed shortly before they arrived. I have no source for this story. The 1850 census shows a Catherine Nash, age 70, listed in the household of Joseph. Joseph’s household also included John and Nancy Hooley and 2 year old Michael Hooley. It can be presumed that Catherine was the mother of the 6 immigrants. The current owner of the Samuel Nash farm in Saranac said that Catherine learned she was a widow when she arrived in the US. Did the father of the family come to the US ahead of his wife and children, or did he come with some of the children and Catherine followed later with Samuel? Samuel, from the information given, came to US in 1849, John and Patrick both had children born aboard the ship crossing the Atlantic in 1845. The siblings were Mary, Samuel, John, Nancy, Patrick and Joseph. Nothing has been recorded about other children who may have stayed in Ireland. The families settled in the area of Saranac that became known as Nashville. Mary Nash was born in 1801 according to her grave stone. She married Jeremiah Mahanna and had, as far as we have records, one child. The son used the spelling Mahoney. Mary and Jeremiah settled on the Dannemora-Cadyville Road. The recorded child of Mary Nash and Jeremiah Mahanna was 1. Dennis, born about 1834, married Margaret Canning Samuel Nash was a native of County Cork, Ireland, where he was born about 1804 and died in August 23, 1888 in Saranac, N.Y. He is buried in St. James Cemetery in Cadyville, NY. The gravestone gives his age at death as 88. He married, in Ireland, Bridget Cassidy or Canty, also from County Cork, and they came to America with their five children. They settled in Saranac. Although the family information gives Bridget’s maiden name as Cassidy, she is seen as Canty in baptismal records, and name on the grave stone, which is partially obliterated, shows the first four letters of her name as Cant. The children of Bridget and Samuel Nash were 1. Catherine who married Richard Murphy and lived in Minnesota 2. John born about 1838, married Mary Murray of Saranac 3. Elizabeth born about 1841, married Thomas E. Healey of Plattsburgh 4. Anna born about 1844, married Michael Judge of Saranac 5. Joseph S, married Anna Moffitt and resided in Dannemora. His birth was said to have been 1849 in Ireland. If Joseph was born in Ireland in 1849 then Samuel did not come to the US with the rest of his siblings 6. Robert Francis of Plattsburgh, born May 31 1852. Robert said to be the only child born in the US. He married first Mary J. Healey and second Honora Buckley. John Nash was born about 1813 and died Feb 1, 1858. He married Ellen and their first child was born aboard the ship bringing them to the US in 1845. About 1860 Ellen married Richard Grogan and was known by her descendants as Grandma Grogan. John and Ellen had a farm across the railroad tracks near the Nashville school house. In later years the property was owned by the Lashway family. John and Ellen had 1. John J, born about 1845 aboard the ship coming to America. He was known at “Big Johnny” 2. Robert, born about 1847 3. Joseph born about 1848 4. Mary born May 1850 5. James born about 1852 6. Patrick born about 1854 7. Thomas born about 1856 8. Ellen born about 1859, married Daniel Hooley. She was called Nellie Three of the sons of John and Ellen went to Colorado Nancy A. Nash, born about 1820, married John Hooley. Records of her death show her as Anna. Nancy is often a nickname for Anna. Nancy and John lived on what was called Mountain Road, now called Hugh Herron Road, between Nashville and Dannemora. Nancy and John had 1. Michael about 1848, based on census records 2. Kate. This is not confirmed. There is a grave stone next to that of Anna Nash Hooley in St. James Cemetery that reads simply Little Katie. Patrick Nash was born about 1818 and died April 8, 1853. He married Margaret Dwyer. They settled on a farm which joined the Tom Corrigan property. The land was later owned by their daughter and son-in-law Mary and Patrick Gregory. About eight years after arriving in the US Patrick was fatally injured by a blow from a falling tree. He was helping neighbors clear land for a new building at an event called a “bee.” He lived for a few hours after the injury, giving enough time for someone to ride to Plattsburgh for a priest. Margaret was pregnant at the time, and four months later gave birth to a daughter. In November 1856 Margaret married David Collins and had two more children. The children of Patrick and Margaret Nash were 1. John Patrick, known as John P, born about 1838 or 1839 (grave stone says 1839). He married Mary Pickett 2. Catherine, born 1845 onboard the ship coming to the US, married Edmund J. Pickett 3. Mary born Jan 1848, married Patrick Gregory 4. Anna born about 1849, married William Grogan 5. Matthew born about 1851, married Mary Tierney 6. Margaret born August 1853, married John Pickett Joseph Nash was born about 1822. He married Margaret Nyhan who was born in Ireland. They were apparently married after 1850 as the 1850 census does not show a wife in Joseph’s household. Joseph and Margaret had 1. Catherine born about 1854, married William O’Meara 2. Joseph Edwin born Oct 1858, married Anna Frances Collins 3. Patrick born June 6, 1862 4. Dennis born about 1864 5. John born May 28, 1868, died May 1, 1889 6.
