Rosalind, I also am descended from William and Betty (Hardwick?) Nash of Cullpepper County and am trying to figure out the Nash ancestry connection to the Lancaster and Northumberland County Nashes that has been theorized by others. However, All anyone can say for certain right now is that Our William Nash of Cullpepper (who died mid-1750s) had a father Also name William Nash who had property in Lancaster County. We know that William Nash (died circa 1754) of Cullpepper County, VA (my proven g.g.g.g.g.g.grandfather) had a father also named William Nash who left him property in Lancaster County because of a late 1730s land-transfer record showing that our William Nash sold/traded property his father william Nash had left him for land in the Orange/Cullpepper County. Now there is evidence that possibly several William Nashes lived in Lancaster County, Va in the early 1700s (however they may all be the same person, two, three or four different William Nashes): (A) William Nash who died in 1719, whose LW&T mentions an educatable age son named William (perhaps our William?), a wife named Anne, a brother named John Nash.... and a good friend Elias Edmounds entrusted with ensuring son William's education. (B) William Nash whose marriage to Anne Kirk was documented circa 1717.... presuming this isn't a late entry for their marriage (at least four or five years earlier) then they are probably not the William and Anne Nash mentioned in (A) above since they probably would not have a school-age son by 1719. (C) William and Anne Nash who sold Nashes Mill located on the Carotomen (sp?) Branch circa 1709... possibly the same William and Aanne Nash as in (A) and/or (B) above. (D) Mrs. Amey Nash who died in Lancaster County in 1710 whose LWT names son William and several daughters. Now as for the earlier Northumberland County William Nashes.... there are two William Nashes that are probably connected to the later father and son William Nashes menntioned in the 1719 LWT in (A) above... an earlier father and son who lived in the 1600s in Northumberland County in the area that became Lancaster County, VA. William Nash "I", a Northumberland County "Commissioner", who died in the mid-1650s (he is believed to be the same William Nash who came over on the ship "Globe" in mid-1600s) leaving wife Anne (Hopkins) and three sons: Thomas Nash born circa 1649, William Nash "II" born circa 1651 (who later chose William Edmonds as guardian; William Edmonds father of Elias Edmounds who was the close friend of William Nash "A" mentioned above) and John Nash born 1653. The three sons' birthdays are recorded but I am going from memory here. Son William Nash "II" outlived his brothers (John died first then Thomas) and is presumedly the William Nash listed in the militia "horse service" in the 1680s, the William Nash in Christ Church Tithe records and the William Nash who apparently left an early 1690s estate record. As far as I can see there is no proof that William Nash "II" was the husband of widow Amey Nash who died circa 1710... or that he was the father/grandfather of William Nash who was married to Anne by the 1710s. I'm trying to get copies of the land records in Lancaster (if the still exist)... if I can ID the property our William sold in the 1730s that his father had earlier left him in Lancaster County and compare to property that might be documented for william Nash (A, B, C, or D) mentioned above it might help establish the connection. Sincerely, Len R. Lenrein2@yahoo.com P.S. I am descended from William and Betty Nash of Cullpepper County thru their son John Nash who married Polly Harrison Long in VA... thru their son Ezekiel Nash b. 1776 who married widow Elizabeth (Norris) Pope in SC... thru their son Ira Norris Nash born 1805 who married Lucy Mullin in MS... thru their son John J. N. Nash born 1829 who was my grandfather's grandfather. Notify Administrator about this message?
