NASH - MASH - MARSH

I just thought that I would pass this new information along to everyone, regarding our NASH Family, you may want to print this out and read it through, as it is quite long.

I told all of our family at the NASH Family Reunion (held in Caledonia, Missouri) in June, this year, that our NASH family surname has been hard to trace. That we have found it listed as NASH, MASH, NANCE and even MARSH, in Census Records, Marriage and Death Records.

In late August, I was sent information regarding a book that had been written and published by CLARENCE E. (Elmer) MASH in 1990. The name of this book is:

MASH 1635-1989: Our Ancestors

This book is no longer in print, and I bought the Microfilm, through the Family Search Library, in Salt Lake City, Utah, for our local Mormon Church Library, so they can keep a copy here in their Library.

I have made two trips to the Mormon Church, here in town, to read and research this Microfilm of this book. I have found my CLAIBOURN NASH / MASH born 1834 -1835 Illinois, and his parents WILLIAM MASH born 1805 -1810
Kentucky and LOUVINA (Maiden name unknown) born 1809 Kentucky, as well as Claibourn's four other siblings, Henry born 1827 Indiana, Elizabeth born 1832 Indiana or Illinois, James born 1838 Illinois, and Mary born 1839 Illinois, are all listed in this book. YES, "UNKNOWN" NASH is actually
WILLIAM MASH...........The Bricks, so to speak, have been knocked out of my Brick Wall, finally !!!

I am sure that cousin Erma's WILLIAM NASH / MASH is also in this book, as well as our JOHN W. "Jack or Jackson" NASH / MASH. I have not read through this complete Microfilm as yet, but with our DNA Testing on all three (3) of
these NASH lines matching a 25 Marker Test identically, I would say without a doubt that they are also listed in this book.

According to this book, my WILLIAM MASH is listed as the son of WRIGHT MASH and SALLY MARTIN.

WRIGHT and SALLY had the following children:

William MASH born 1805 - 1810 (my GGGrandfather)
Sally MASH born 1815
David MASH born 1810 - 1820
Martin MASH born 1810 - 1820
Polly MASH born 1816
UNKNOWN Male Child born 1820 - 1825
UNKNOWN Male Child born 1820 - 1825
Edward Harvey MASH born 1834 - Lived in Shannon County

There are seven MASH Families in Jasper Twp., Shannon County, Missouri, in the 1860 US Census Records. I am listing all seven:

1. Harry Mash 24 and wife Irena Mash 18

2. Harrison Mash 47 and wife Elizabeth Mash 48

3. Harrison Mash 25, Thomas Mash 22, John Mash 18,
Henry Mash 12, Acy Mash 10, Delilah Mash 7

4. Harvey Mash 24 and wife Martha Mash 18,

THE ABOVE FAMILY listed as # 7, is our JOHN W. "JACK or JACKSON" NASH, his wife HANNAH, and their family.

From what I can see in Census Records, the name change took place with my Great Grandfather CLAIBOURN MASH and JOHN W. MASH and family between 1860 and 1880. Below are Census Records for 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880, showing when this took place.

Also remember my Claibourn's mother LOUVINA remarried on July 15,1847, in Richland County, Illinois. I have a copy of that Marriage Application and License, and it shows her name as LOUVINA MASH, and his name as Richard Pierce.

NOW, BACK TO THE BOOK:

I have located two daughters of Clarence E. Mash, who wrote and had his book published in 1990. As I said that book is out of print and no more copies are available.

HOWEVER, the daughters have agreed to fund a second publishing of the book, with some added information, as they have continually researched this family since the death of their father, Clarence E. Mash, 2 years after his publication. We do not have a price on what this book will cost as yet, they are checking with the printers, and on binding and covers this week, and will let me know as soon as they find out. They are planning on putting their new research that they have done on CD, and just reprinting
the book that their father had published in 1990.

There is currently 396 pages full of information, family group sheets, and sources, as to where Clarence E. Mash found his information regarding our family. He did major traveling and research in order to put this book together. His daughters Nadine and Sharon have continued his research, and have lots of other information to add.

I can also tell you that our NASH / MASH family has been traced back to 1635, in Ipswich, England (a small port city just north of London). Story has it that the surname actually started out as MARSH. They left England in
early 1635, and landed in Hingham Bay, Massachusettes, in late 1635. It was George MASH (MARSH), and two sons John MASH (Marsh) and Andrew MASH (MARSH) who came in first. John met and married Susanna Skelton in 1636 in Salem,
MA. They had ten (10) children.

They have been traced for many Generations down through Baintree, MA, into Franklin and Harrison County, Kentucky, into Cumberland County, Kentucky, up through Indiana, into Lawrence, Richland, and Clay Counties in Illinois, then into Missouri. From there our NASH / MASH families have moved into Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, California, Oregon and Washington, as well as other parts of the country.

From my understanding this was a hardback bound book, and as I said quite large. I am very impressed just looking at the Microfilm, as I can see just how much attention and work that Clarence put into this book.

I just thought all of you NASH, MASH, MARSH researchers would like to see what I have found of my own family ancestry. As I said this has been one hard family for me to trace, and if I can help anyone else with this same line, I am very gald to do so.

I also have our family tree, "The Webs We Weave" currently posted on Tribal Pages, less all of this new Family information to date. I will be adding more information as soon as I get the new book in. My website address is:
