Confederate Mass Burial March-April 1862 at Kinston

I am seeking further information about a mass burial at Kinston in which my 2X great grandfather was buried. He enlisted with the 26th NC, Co. B in Union County. Family oral history says that he was drowned with several others near Kinston, and that their bodies were buried in a mass grave there about March-April of 1862. His name was William "Billy" Mosely (Moseley, Mosley) of Union County, NC. Is there some local historian out there who can help me with this? Thanks for considering my request, and any help offered.
