Joseph Bickford of Newfield, ME and Bartlett, NH

I'm looking for the ancestors of Joseph Bickford born around 1784, location unknown. I have already checked the obvious places, including census and vitals. I talked to Ruth Bridges Ayers who wrote of the Newfield Families, and she said she could not find out from where he came. His wife, Mary, died in Bartlett between the 1850 and 1860 census. His death 19 Mar 1839 in Bartlett gives no clues to parents. He moved to Bartlett between 1820 and 1830 (censuses). Joseph and Mary had at least six children. It may be that examination of their history will unearth something. Then, probate court records may show something. He may have sold property in Newfield and bought property in Bartlett. Certainly it seems all the "easy" stuff has been done. Of course, I still need to find the surname of his wife, Mary. I'm not that far from NH if I could determine where to find these records. I'm thinking his wife's surname could be Gilman because a son was named Gilman Bickford and the Gilman family is quite important in early NH history (Gilmanton).
